Background
Speed in approving a technology is key limiting factor in providing health benefits for patients, health professionals and health policy makers. Rapidapproval risks safety and possibly extra costs while approving a technology very slowly could mean serious delays in resolving serious medical disorders – from international medical emergencies such as the current COVID-19 pandemic to established serious common and rarer diseases. Key issues to be discussed during the webinar include: the function of diagnostic tests; what to do following a positive test; the fact that a negative test today may not mean a negative test tomorrow; why can’t we assess the value of a diagnostic test very well, both during a pandemic and at other times?
