Biographies: Updates on Cardiovascular Medicine

Franco Cappuccio MD MSc DSc FRCP FFPH FBIHS FESC FAHA

Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine & Epidemiology and Consultant Physician
University of Warwick and UHCW NHS Trust

Franco is a cardiovascular physician, a clinical epidemiologist and a public health expert. He trained at Charing Cross Hospital, St George’s Hospital Medical School and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in London. In 2000 he became Professor of Clinical Epidemiology & Primary Care at St George’s, University of London and took up the Cephalon Chair at the University of Warwick in 2005. He runs the Regional Hypertension Service in Coventry and is Director of the European Center of Excellence in Hypertension of the European Society of hypertension. From 2017-2019 he was President of the British and Irish Hypertension Society.

His main research interests are in the prevention, detection and management of hypertension and its complications of the heart, brain, kidneys and the circulation. His research interests are the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, nutrition and health, metabolic abnormalities and cardiovascular risk, risk in ethnic minorities, both in developed and developing countries.

Professor Donald Singer
President of the Fellowship of Postgraduate Medicine

Donald Singer is a physician and clinical pharmacologist interested in new approaches to personalising medicine and in public understanding of health and drugs. He is chair of healthy heart charity the Cardiovascular Research Trust. He trained in renal medicine at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London and went on to become a clinician and researcher at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, St George’s Medical School, Imperial College at Harefield and Warwick Medical School. He has also worked as a clinical pharmacologist for Yale School of Medicine within US-AID and CDC-supported programmes in Rwanda.  @HealthMed

Professor Bernard Cheung

University of Hong Kong

Professor Cheung heads the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics in the Department of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. He is an Honorary Consultant Physician of Queen Mary Hospital and the Medical Director of the Phase 1 Clinical Trials Centre. He is also the Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Science and Medicine at the University of Hong Kong and the President of the Hong Kong Pharmacology Society. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Postgraduate Medical Journal, an official journal of the Fellowship of Postgraduate Medicine. He is also a trustee of healthy heart charity the Cardiovascular Research Trust.
